What is PEX pipe?
PEX is the abbreviation of cross-linked polyethylene. PEX pipes are used for radiant heating and cooling systems, as well as water pipe and cable insulation. PEX can be bent, twisted or crushed to some extent. It can also be restored to its original shape. We need to apply low heat to the pipe to help it recover. PEX pipe can also be connected with copper pipe.
How are PEX pipe assembled?
Push fit: Push fit, also known as plug-in clamp, does not require any tools for accessories. PEX pushes in the connector by hand and holds it firmly in place with the small teeth in the connector.
Crimping: PEX is installed in the brass connector with copper ring around the connector. The crimping tool is used to slightly deform the copper ring and hold it in place.
Clamp: The clamp is similar to the copper ring. The clamp surrounds the pipe and is sealed with a special tool.
Thermal expansion: the end of PEX pipe is widened with a special heat gun. Then quickly slide the tube onto the connector. As the tube cools, it shrinks and fits tightly on the joint.
Why is pex pipe the ideal choice for DIY?
Low cost: PEX is much cheaper than copper tube, usually one-third of the cost of copper tube.
Color coding: red PEX pipe can be used for hot water supply pipe. Blue PEX for cold water supply. Both hot and cold are white. These colors are just for your convenience. The pipe specification does not require that the pipe color match the water supply type.
Easy connection: plug-in connector only requires PEX tube, connector and hand. No special tools are required.
Easy to cut: Because PEX is soft, it is easier to cut than copper pipe or galvanized pipe. Scissor type sharp pipe cutter allows you to cut PEX by hand in a flash.
Flexibility: PEX can bend 90 degrees (right angle), and the bending radius corresponds to the pipe diameter. For 1/2 inch PEX pipe, the radius is 5 inches. For 3/4 inch PEX pipe, the radius is 7 inches. For straight running, PEX has some leeway.
